Balancing Books and Balance Sheets: Alexander’s Journey at Clarity

Starting a new job is always a big step - but starting a new job and a five-year degree at the same time? That’s next-level commitment.

This month, we’re catching up with our newest team member, Alexander Smith, who joined Clarity Accounting full-time earlier this year after impressing everyone during his school work experience placement in 2024.

From Work Experience to Work Life

“When I came for work experience through my high school in November 2024, I could never have guessed I’d end up here full-time,” Alexander says. “But after spending just one week at Clarity, I knew it was exactly the kind of company I’d love to work for - an office filled with hard-working, kind, and fun people.

So when I was offered a trainee role, I didn’t hesitate.”

It’s fair to say he’s fitted in brilliantly. From his first week, Alexander has shown huge enthusiasm for learning and an eagerness to take on new challenges - even the tricky ones that most trainees might shy away from.

Studying While Working

Alexander is studying for the Graduate Apprenticeship Master of Accountancy at Glasgow Caledonian University, a five-year course that combines full-time study with full-time work.

“It’s a lot to juggle,” he admits, “but I’m confident this is the best route for me. It allows me to gain valuable professional experience while also working towards a master’s degree. The course is designed to complement my day-to-day work at Clarity, helping me apply what I learn in real time and deepen my understanding of accounting.”

Learning, Growing, and Finding Balance

Juggling deadlines, lectures, and client work isn’t easy, but Alexander’s mindset says it all. “It’s been challenging diving into things I’ve never seen before, but I’ve really enjoyed it. Everyone here has been incredibly supportive - I’ve learned so much already, and I’m excited to keep growing with the company.”
